point linux

"Point Linux is a GNU/Linux distribution that aims to combine the power of Debian GNU/Linux with the productivity of MATE, the Gnome 2 desktop environment fork. Point Linux provides an easy to set up and use distribution for users, looking for a fast, stable and predictable desktop."

for me, i really enjoy using peppermint linux and crunchbang. i have still been looking for that perfect distro for others. that distro i can load up and give to any user coming from any OS and have it be easy, clean, and traditional, while being stable and quick for me to deploy as well. so far, point linux is looking like a great contender. i'll be showing the default desktop and discussing point linux saturday.. thanks!

New to Linux?

join me back at the firestorm cafe for an interesting look at some of the pitfalls a new user might face when coming to linux for the first time, and what they can do, and more importantly, things that we as a community might be able to do to help those users migrate. we will talk about, but not be limited to discussing the following topics...

- hardware support: this is so much better these days, but it can still make or break the experience for some new users
- troubleshooting: we will talk about removing hardware issues from the equation and testing with live CD's. how .hidden .config files can be responsible for issues, and how to check for those issues
- a bigger picture: trying to, within reason, teach new users how to use computers generally, instead of how to use a certain application specifically to accomplish a task
- xp: there are a few efforts to supply a replacement for xp for the desktop. i would like to discuss those efforts.

i will try and leave plenty of time for Q&A at the end.. this would be a great day to bring a machine with an issue, or a friend with a machine with an issue, or a USB sound card, or whatever hardware/software one might be struggling with, and see if we can come up with some answers.. see you there!

Kevin Jones shares with us about "Carolina Free PC".

Kevin Jones is working with Charlotte Street Computers and the Eblen Foundation to start a Linux-based computer recycling initiative to serve the WNC area called "Carolina Free PC". A similar initiative in Upstate SC through the UCLUG back in 2006 called Free Linux PC, and it has been up and running continuously for seven years. Join us to hear about this great new program, and find out how to get involved!

March 2nd at noon over at the firestorm cafe.
